Bickwell
Bickwell Valley is a picturesque and historically significant area located on the western edge of Sidmouth, Devon. It is a notable part of a designated conservation area within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The valley was primarily developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is characterised by its substantial detached villas set within generous plots. Its natural hollow landscape is complemented by mature trees and gardens, contributing to its serene ambience.
The Sidmouth Nature project survey specifically focused on Muttersmoor Road, which runs from the top end of Bickwell Valley Road up towards Bulverton Hill, noting interesting hedgerows and a small drainage stream along its sides. In excess of 70 flowering plant species recorded there across the year by the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group.
Efforts towards environmental stewardship are evident, including the identification of runoff hotspots in the Bickwell Brook catchment area by the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group, aimed at preserving the valley's ecological integrity.
